Quick answer

Kasa and Tapo are both TP-Link. For a new smart plug setup, Tapo P110M is the better value: Matter, energy monitoring, and a 4-pack around $36 (as of Oct 19). Pick Kasa KP125M (4-pack around $50) if you already run the Kasa app and want everything in one place. Need the cheapest Matter on/off plug and don’t care about power data? Tapo P125M. Living in Apple Home without a Matter setup? Kasa EP25 works with Siri and tracks energy, but it isn’t Matter.

How we researched this

We compared TP-Link’s official product pages for the Kasa KP125M, Kasa EP25, Tapo P110M, and Tapo P125M, plus our price checks. We only included claims we could confirm on TP-Link’s own pages. Research-based only. No hands-on testing.

Kasa vs Tapo: what’s actually different

  • Same company, different apps. Kasa devices run in the Kasa Smart app and Tapo devices run in the Tapo app. If you already own one line, staying with it keeps everything in one app.
  • Matter levels the field. Every Matter-certified plug here can be added to Apple Home, Google Home, or Alexa by scanning its Matter code, so the brand app matters less once you’re on Matter.
  • Price. Tapo’s Matter plugs cost less per plug in our checks.
  • Local control. TP-Link’s Tapo P110M and P125M pages say the plugs stay controllable on your home network through the Tapo app (or a Matter app for the P125M) even when the internet goes down.

Matter with energy monitoring: Kasa KP125M vs Tapo P110M

Both are Matter-certified mini plugs that track energy use and let you enter your electricity rate for bill estimates, per TP-Link.

  • Kasa KP125M: TP-Link lists a 15 A, 1800 W max load, UL certification, voice control through Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant, plus schedules, timers, auto-off, and Away Mode. Setup uses Bluetooth in the Kasa app or the Matter code in Apple Home, Google Home, or Alexa.
  • Tapo P110M: TP-Link lists ETL safety certification, overload protection, an auto shut-off you can set when power goes over a threshold (its example is 1.5 kW for a space heater), local control, schedules, auto-off, and Away Mode. Even so, we don’t recommend using any smart plug with a space heater: the CPSC advises plugging space heaters directly into a wall outlet.

Pick P110M to save money on a new setup. Pick KP125M if your other gear lives in the Kasa app.

Cheapest Matter plug: Tapo P125M

TP-Link lists the P125M as Matter-certified and smaller than its older P100, with schedules, auto-off, Away Mode, and local control. There’s no energy monitoring, so it’s best for lamps, fans, and holiday lights where you only need on and off. A single was around $12 and a 3-pack around $25 (as of Oct 19).

Energy monitoring without Matter: Kasa EP25

TP-Link’s EP25 page lists energy monitoring, a 15 A max load, UL certification, a 2-year warranty, and voice control through Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant, and Samsung SmartThings. It does not list Matter. It’s a good, cheap pick if you won’t need Matter later. If you might, spend a little more on a KP125M or P110M.

Which should you buy?

  1. New setup, any assistant: Tapo P110M 4-pack.
  2. Already use the Kasa app: Kasa KP125M.
  3. Just need on and off: Tapo P125M.
  4. Want energy data and no Matter: Kasa EP25.
