Safety first: Smart switches are wired into your home’s electrical system. Turn off the breaker before you open a switch box, check the wires with a voltage tester, and hire a licensed electrician if you’re unsure or if your lease doesn’t allow electrical changes.
Quick answer
Looking for a smart light switch without a neutral wire? You have three solid options from Lutron, Aqara, and Leviton. If your switch box does have a neutral, the field opens up to cheaper Matter switches from Tapo and Kasa.
- No neutral wire, want the most dependable dimmer: Lutron Caséta Original Smart Dimmer with the Lutron Smart Hub.
- No neutral wire, want Matter: Aqara Light Switch H2 US, which works with or without a neutral and runs Matter over Thread.
- Have a neutral, want the cheapest Matter switch: Tapo S505, as long as it’s a single-pole switch (one switch controls the light).
- Already use the Kasa app: Kasa KS205, a Matter-certified switch that also requires a neutral.

First, check for a neutral wire
The neutral wire decides which switches you can buy. Homes wired after the 2011 National Electrical Code update generally have a neutral in each switch box, Leviton notes, but many older homes don’t. With the breaker off, take off the switch plate. TP-Link’s install guides describe the neutral as “usually white, not connected to the dumb switch.” If the only wires are the ones attached to your old switch plus a bare or green ground, you probably don’t have one, and you need a no-neutral model.
Best no-neutral smart dimmer: Lutron Caséta Original Smart Dimmer (PD-6WCL)
Lutron’s spec sheet calls the PD-6WCL a “two-wire dimmer ideal for retrofit applications. No neutral required.” It dims up to 150 W of dimmable LEDs or 600 W of incandescent or halogen bulbs and supports 3-way setups when paired with a Pico remote, with no extra wiring.
Caséta uses Lutron’s own Clear Connect radio rather than Wi-Fi, so you’ll need the Lutron Smart Hub (formerly the Smart Bridge) for app control, schedules, and voice. Through the hub it works with Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, and Google Home. Caséta doesn’t support Matter, so it’s a good fit if you want reliable dimming and don’t need Matter. Not sure which hub or Matter controller you need? See our smart home hub guide for beginners.
- Good for: older homes, dimmable LED fixtures, 3-way stairs and hallways using a Pico remote.
- Price: the dimmer is around $58 (as of Oct 22) and the Lutron Smart Hub around $90 (as of Oct 19). Caséta dimmer on Amazon, Lutron Smart Hub on Amazon, or the dimmer with a Pico remote for around $83 (as of Oct 22).
- Watch out for: the hub is a separate purchase, and the switch must be within 30 feet of the hub through walls, per Lutron’s spec sheet.
Best no-neutral Matter switch: Aqara Light Switch H2 US
Aqara’s H2 US installs with or without a neutral and supports Thread, Zigbee, and Bluetooth. In Matter-over-Thread mode, the default, you can add it straight to Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, or SmartThings without an Aqara hub, as long as you have a Thread border router. Zigbee mode unlocks more features in the Aqara Home app but requires an Aqara hub.
It comes in 1-, 2-, and 3-channel versions, so one wall box can control up to three circuits. There are trade-offs without a neutral. Aqara lists a 5 W minimum load in no-neutral mode, and its store page says overload protection and power monitoring are only available with a neutral.
- Good for: Matter households in older homes, and multi-gang boxes.
- Price: around $50 for the 1-channel model (as of Oct 19). Aqara Light Switch H2 US on Amazon; make sure the listing says US, not EU.
- Watch out for: it’s an on/off switch, not a dimmer, and very low-wattage LED fixtures may fall under the 5 W minimum.
No-neutral pick for Decora fans: Leviton Decora Smart No-Neutral Dimmer (DN6HD)
Leviton’s DN6HD is built for homes without a neutral in the switch box. It needs line, load, and earth ground connections, plus Leviton’s MLWSB Decora Smart Wi-Fi Bridge. Leviton rates it for up to 300 W of LED/CFL and 600 W of incandescent or halogen bulbs, and says it works with Alexa, Google, Apple Home, SmartThings, and Sonos. Schedules are stored on the device, so they keep running during a short internet outage.
- Good for: Decora-style homes, with wire-free 3-way control through Leviton’s Anywhere companions.
- Price: the dimmer is around $50 (as of Oct 19): Leviton DN6HD on Amazon. You also need the bridge: the Leviton MLWSB Wi-Fi Bridge on Amazon is around $25 (as of Oct 22), or buy Leviton’s DNKIT dimmer and bridge kit (check current price).
- Watch out for: you need an earth ground and the bridge. If you do have a neutral, Leviton points you to its D26HD dimmer instead, which doesn’t need the bridge and gets Matter through a firmware update.
Best budget Matter switch with a neutral: Tapo S505
TP-Link lists the Tapo S505 as Matter-certified and compatible with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Assistant, and SmartThings. It connects over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi with no hub and is rated for 15 A general use and 600 W incandescent loads. It does require a neutral, and TP-Link says it’s a single-pole switch that isn’t compatible with 3-way wiring. It’s around $16, or around $24 for a 2-pack (as of Oct 19): Tapo S505 on Amazon, Tapo S505 2-pack on Amazon. The S505D is the dimmer version, and the older S500 doesn’t support Matter.
Best for Kasa app users: Kasa KS205
The Kasa KS205 is a Matter-certified on/off switch from TP-Link’s Kasa line. Its datasheet lists “neutral wiring in wall box required” and the same 15 A / 600 W incandescent rating as the Tapo S505. Pick it if your plugs and bulbs already live in the Kasa app. Otherwise the Tapo S505 covers the same basics. It’s around $22 (as of Oct 19): Kasa KS205 on Amazon. The KS225 is the dimmer version, and the older KS200 doesn’t support Matter. (Our Kasa vs Tapo comparison explains how the two TP-Link lines differ.)
Renting? Consider a no-wiring option
If you can’t change the wiring, a smart plug on a lamp or a smart bulb gets you most of the way there without opening a switch box. See our Best Smart Plugs for 2026 and Best Matter Smart Lights guides.
How we chose
We compared manufacturer spec sheets and install guides from Lutron, Aqara, Leviton, and TP-Link, focusing on neutral-wire requirements, dimming, Matter support, hub requirements, and 3-way support. We haven’t installed these switches ourselves. Always follow the manufacturer’s wiring instructions and local electrical code.

Frequently asked questions
Can I install a smart light switch without a neutral wire?
Yes, if you buy a model built for it. Lutron's Caséta Original Smart Dimmer (PD-6WCL), Leviton's Decora Smart No-Neutral Dimmer (DN6HD), and Aqara's Light Switch H2 US all list no-neutral installation. Most Wi-Fi switches, including the Kasa KS205 and Tapo S505, require a neutral wire.
How do I know if I have a neutral wire?
With the power off at the breaker, remove the switch plate and look in the box. A neutral is usually a white wire bundled with other white wires and not connected to the old switch. If you're not sure, use a voltage tester or ask an electrician.
Which smart switches work with Matter?
The Tapo S505, Kasa KS205, and Aqara Light Switch H2 US are Matter-certified. Leviton says its D26HD dimmer and D215S switch get Matter through a free firmware update. Lutron Caséta doesn't use Matter but works with Apple Home, Alexa, and Google Home through the Lutron Smart Hub.
Do no-neutral smart switches need a hub?
Usually, yes. Caséta needs the Lutron Smart Hub for app and voice control, the Leviton DN6HD needs the MLWSB Wi-Fi Bridge, and the Aqara H2 US in Matter mode needs a Thread border router such as a recent HomePod mini, Apple TV 4K, Nest Hub, or Echo.
